New superheavy isotope 285114 produced at LBNL

November 3rd, 2010

The new neutron deficient isotope 285114 has been produced by irradiation of 242Pu targets with 48Ca projectiles. In addition, through decay of the parent 285114, 5 new daughters nuclides have been observed for the first time: 281Cn, 277Ds, 273Hs, 269Sg, and 265Rf.

40 new heavy neutron rich nuclei discovered at GSI

November 2nd, 2010

Using the high resolving power magnetic spectrometer Fragment Separator at GSI, 40 new nuclides from elements between platinum and francium have been identfied from the fragmentation of relativistic U-238 projectiles. The nuclides discovered are heavier than the 45 nuclides reported in the recent RIKEN experiments.
