New Dosimetry & Shielding++ released

As announced in the Nucleonica Newsletter at the beginnig of the year, we are currently upgrading most of the applications with a view to improving user-friendliness and calculation / response times. This means in practice fewer calls to the webserver and more emphasis on local client side computing. The next application to be released incorporating these new features is Dosimetry & Shielding++. The name has been changed to Dosimetry & Shielding++ to distinguish it from the previous version (which we will continue to support for some time).
The main improvement are summarised as follows:
1. The integrated gamma dose is now available. Previously, only the gamma dose rate was calculated. The integrated gamma dose is of interest in the field of nuclear medicine. The gamma dose rate and the gamma dose are both activated in the Options tab. Thereafter the results are available in the output grid and in the graph.

2. The data output in the grids and tables are now based on JavaScript. This implies that once a dosimetry & shielding calculation has been made on the server, the results in the data grids and tables can be re-arranged locally on the client computer. This avoids the time-consuming calls to the web server.

3. The graphics package has been updated based on scalable vector graphics (SVG) and javascript (previously the images were created on the server and then transferred to the client browser). The user can now change the size of the graph, change the basic graph settings, etc. The results appear immediately avoiding the time-consuming delays associated with web-server calls.

4. A new slider control has been introduced for easier identification of gamma energies and nuclides in the spectral graph.

5. The Dosimetry & Shielding++ application has been tested successfully with Firefox, Chrome, and Safari browsers. It runs also on the Internet Explorer (IE) but only on version 9 (it does not run on IE8 – no support for SVG).

New e-Ship++ released

In this new release of the e-Ship++ application a number of improvements have been made:
1. In the package description, a new field “Radioactive contents” has been introduced. This field gives information on the activity limits for so-called “unknown nuclides”. These limits depend on the type of radiation emitted by the nuclide e.g. a beta or gamma emitter, an alpha emitter (if more than 1 alpha per 1000 decays is emitted but no neutrons) or a neutron emitter. The emitter type of each nuclide is determined and indicated in the e-Ship data grid as well as in the report e.g. β/γ. If the activity limits are listed in the ADR, and IAEA tables, the emitter category is not relevant – this is then indicated by the value in parenthesis e.g. (β/γ). See Radioactive contents

2. In the package description, a new field “Notes” has been introduced. These notes correspond exactly to the Notes in the ADR and IAEA reports for the listed nuclides.

3. In the package description, the field “Chemical form (please take care of subsidiary risk)” has been added. The (mandatory) field forces the user to consider the possiblity of subsidiary risk associated with the chemical form of the material.

4. In the nuclear material transport report, additional information is listed in the source characterisation such as Exemption limit (LE), Licensing limit (LA), and the related dose coefficients, etc., together with the Radioactive contents and Notes described above. Direct hyperlinks to the ADR and IAEA reports and to the Nucleoinca Glossary have been included for easier reference to these documents.

5. In package decay calculations, the rules for including daughter products according to the ADR, IAEA reports (e.g. secular equilibrium has been assumed or daughter products with half-lives less than 10 days have been taken into account) in the activity limits.

Nucleonica’s Nuclide Explorer and Universal Nuclide Chart Applications now only for Premium users

The purpose of the Free access accounts in Nucleonica is to give newly registered users the opportunity to get a feel for the nuclear science portal, to try out the various applications, and to see if Nucleonica is useful for their work. If users find the portal useful, they should then take out a Premium subscription with full unrestricted access to over 3800 nuclides and isomers and to all applications and features.
Free accounts have access restricted to 5-10 nuclides – the purpose being that this should be sufficient to test the various applications. In addition, to date, Free accounts have also full unrestricted access to the very popular Nuclide Explorer and the Universal Nuclide Chart.

Recently, however, there has been excessive traffic on our webservers caused by Free users working with the Nuclide Explorer and Universal Nuclide Chart applications. The consequence of this is that for our Premium users, application response times are longer. In order to avoid this problem, access to both the Nuclide Explorer and the Universal Nuclide Chart will, in future, only be available to Premium users. Users with Free accounts will continue to have access to most Nucleonica applications but restricted to 5-10 nuclides.
This action will ensure faster response times for our Premium users and take effect immediately. We apologise for any inconvenience.
For Free account users interested only in a subset of the Nucleonica applications / features but more comprehensive than that available with Free access, we are currently considering extending our range of accounts. Further information on this can be provided on request to
