The limits of the nuclear landscape

July 8th, 2012

In a new paper just published in Nature, the authors investigate the total number of isotopes allowed by the laws of physics. Based on quantum density functional theory, the US groups showed that approximately 7000 bound isotopes are theoretically possible.

In the latest 8th edition of the Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart, information on 3847 experimentally observed ground states and isomers is states is given. Since the previous 2006 edition of the Chart, approximately 190 new nuclides have been discovered.
