Nucleonica welcomes IAEA users

Through an institutional license agreement, staff at the International Atomic Eenrgy agency (IAEA) in Austria has now full Premium access to the Nucleonica modules and features. IAEA
“The IAEA is the world’s center of cooperation in the nuclear field. It was set up in 1957 as the world’s “Atoms for Peace” organization within the United Nations family. The Agency works with its Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote safe, secure and peaceful nuclear technologies.”
The Nucleonica team looks forward to a close interaction with the IAEA colleagues and encourages a strong use of the web portal.

New Formats for Cambio

The Cambio File Converter Application on Nucleonica has been recently updated to automatically read essential data from several new formats that have come into use in the past year. These include data from the following specific detector systems and format types in general use:

Search for superheavy elements in nature continues…

Recently two papers by Marinov et al. have been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Modern Physics E. The title of the first paper is:

“Enrichment of the Superheavy Element Roentgenium (Rg) in Natural Au”.

In this work 16 mg of 99.999% Au were heated in vacuum for two weeks at a temperature of 1127 C (63 C above the melting point of Au). The content of 197Au and 261Rg in the residue was studied with high resolution inductively coupled plasma-sector field mass spectrometry (ICP-SFMS). The residue of Au was 3×10-6 of its original quantity. The recovery of Rg was a few percent. The abundance of Rg compared to Au in the enriched solution was about 2×10-6, which is three to four orders of magnitude enrichment. It is concluded that the evaporation rate of Rg from an Au matrix in vacuum at 63 C above the Au melting point is lower than that of Au.

The title of the second article is: “ICP-SFMS search for long-lived naturally-occurring heavy, superheavy and superactinide nuclei compared to AMS experiments”. In this paper a comparison is made between the positive results obtained by Marinov et al. in the search for heavy, superheavy and superactinide nuclei using ICP-SFMS, and the negative results obtained by Dellinger et al. using AMS. It is argued that it may not be surprising that results obtained from small random samplings of inhomogeneous natural minerals as studied by Dellinger et al. would contrast with concentrations found in homogeneous materials extracted from large quantities of ore as studied by Marinov et al. It is also pointed out that it is possible that the groups of counts at masses 296 and 294 seen by Dellinger et al. could be, within experimental uncertainties, due to 296Rg and 294eka-Bi in long-lived isomeric states. It is argued that in such case, the experiments of Dellinger et al. lend support to the experiments of Marinov et al.

webKORIGEN output in EXCEL spreadsheet

download_webKORIGEN It is now possible to download the webKORIGEN output into an Excel spreadsheet. In a typical calculation around 800 nuclides are produced mainly through the fission process. The list of nuclides together with their masses, activities, etc. can now be downloaded to Excel or CSV files.

The Treasure Island of the Universe – new article on the Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart

An article on the Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart has just been published in the international magazine lab&more (2.11, p26-30). The article: The Treasure Island of the Universe by J. Magill, G. Pfennig, R. Dreher, Z. Soti, gives an introduction to nuclide charts and descibes the specific characterisitics of the Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart. New GSG database for non-zero source-to-detector distances.

A major change in the detector database for the Gamma Spectrum Generator has been made to allow the inclusion of the detector response characterization data for distances greater than 0 cm. The previous database had only detector profiles at 0 cm, which were also used for all other source-to-detector distances. Thus, the change of the response profiles with the distance was not considered (quite a rough approximation). The new database includes the detector response shapes at 0 cm, 1 cm, 5 cm and 25 cm. The GSG makes use of these data to perform the response shape interpolation for other distances in the 0-25 cm interval. For distances higher than 25 cm the profiles at 25 cm are used.
