45 new neutron rich isotopes identified

July 27th, 2010

T. Ohnishi et al., have recently reported the identification of 45 new neutron-rich isotopes produced by the in-flight fission of a 238U beam at 345 MeV/nucleon.
The experiments have been carried out at the RI Beam Factory at the RIKEN Nishina Center. Fission fragments were analyzed and identified by using the superconducting in-flight separator BigRIPS. The authors observed 45 new neutron-rich isotopes: 71Mn, 74;74Fe, 76Co, 79Ni, 81;82Cu, 84;85Zn, 87Ga, 90Ge, 95Se, 98Br, 101Kr, 103Rb, 106;107Sr, 108;109Y, 111;112Zr, 114;115Nb, 115;116;117Mo, 119;120Tc, 121;122;123;124Ru, 123;124;125;126Rh, 127;128Pd, 133Cd, 138138Sn, 140Sb, 143Te, 145I, 148Xe, and 152Ba.

China’s first fast reactor

July 22nd, 2010

China’s first fast reactor became critical at 9:50 hrs on Wednesday July 21, 2010. The reactor technology is based on the use of liquid sodium as coolant. This is an important milestone for China’s nuclear programme and indeed for nuclear programmes worldwide.
China plans to build up to 60 new reactors and have a nuclear power productivity of around 75 GW (gigawatts) 2020.

Nucleonica for KIT students

July 1st, 2010

On 6th of July 2010 the Nucleonica Web Portal and the Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart will be presented to the students of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) at the Institute exhibition of Fakultät für Maschinenbau. Both products will be exhibited along with presentations from eight different research institutes involved in nuclear science.
The purpose of this event is to give the students information on trainee positions, research fellowships, etc. and provide an overview of research activities in the field of nuclear science. This is a good opportunity for Nucleonica team to present itself to the students and to demonstrate a research approach based on the modelling and computing.
