Introduction to Nucleonica – a half-day training course
14th April 2010, ITU Karlsruhe,

The course is aimed at persons who are active in the field of nuclear science. Completion of this course will give the users familiarity with Nucleonica’s web based applications. This will further provide the user with a set of tools which can be used in research, measurements, interpreting results, drawing conclusions and making recommendations. With examples and exercises, a whole variety of core and topical issues in nuclear science and technology will be presented by experts in their respective fields.

Target group
The course is suitable, for example, for physicists, radio-chemists, health physicists, technical experts.

7th edition of “Dorn/Bader Physik 11/12 G8”

The 7th edition of “Dorn/Bader Physik 11/12 G8” (10748), 2010 has just been published by Schroedel* (March 2010). This is the standard physics textbooks used in German schoolfor classes. At the back of the book there is an excerpt from the 7th Edition of the Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart, published by ITU in 2006.

New Joint EC/IAEA Training Course with Nucleonica announced

The next Nucleonica training course will be organised jointly by the EC JRC ITU and the IAEA. The course will take place from the 12-15th Oct. 2010 at the IAEA Marine Environment Laboratory (MEL) in Monaco. There will approximately 30 participants and 10 lecturers.The course is aimed at persons who provide technical support (measurements, interpreting results, drawing conclusions, making recommendations) for the actions in response to environmental radioactivity and nuclear security issues. The course is suitable, for example, for physicists, radio-chemists, health physicists, technical experts etc. from the nuclear industry, nuclear research organizations, universities, regulatory authorities and nuclear medicine institutes. Completion of this course will enhance and support nuclear related decision-making as well as provide formal academic principles in nuclear science. Course requirements are a basic knowledge on physics and chemistry. Further information and application form can be found on our wiki page.

New Nuclides Mixtures Module in Nucleonica

A completely new version of the Nuclide Mixtures module is now available. Creating and editing nuclide mixtures is now much faster and user-friendly. Mixtures (either single mixtures or all mixtures) can be dowloaded as an xml file (and sent to a colleague by email for example). The toal mass or activity can be easily rescaled. Additional description fields, date modified, etc. allow for better mixture management.

Cambio File Converter now available for general use

The Cambio File Converter and Spectrum Analysis module has now been released for general use and testing by Nucleonica users. To get you started, we have provided some sample spectra which can be directly analysed using the spectrum “slider”, crosshair and trackball features. Interested users are invited to join the Cambio Group and/or post any comments, remarks and suggestions in the Cambio forum.

Cambio was developed in response to a need of nuclear emergency response analysts everywhere to be able to quickly read the data from any of a widely growing number of formats used by both commercial and government detector systems worldwide. As the number of manufacturers of nuclear detection instrumentation grows, so does the number of data formats that must be able to be read by emergency analysts. Manufacturers of instrumentation often need to create new and more complex versions of their own formats as technology advances and as new user requirements lead to new, more sophisticated instruments. Evidence for long-lived superactinide element

In a recently published paper in the International Journal of Modern Physics E, Amnon Marinov from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and his colleagues have presented mass spectral evidence for the existence of a long-lived, superheavy isotope with atomic mass number 292, and half-life t1/2 > 108 y. The measured mass matches predictions for the mass of an isotope with atomic number Z = 122 or a nearby element. To date only elements up to Z = 118 have been identified. Because of the deduced very long half-life, the observed isotope at A = 292 is attributed to a long-lived isomeric state.
Independently, in a joint investigation, groups (Gaigalas et al.,) from the Vilnius University Research Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astronomy and from the Institute for Transuranium Elements, have reported the first electronic structure calculations for element 122.
